Day 145: a happy kind of sourness
I only have about five minutes to get this written and posted; we’re off to the Lake District for the weekend and will be leaving soon. Correction: we still have the breakfast to eat, bags to pack, dogs to sort; it could be a little while yet!
As you’ll know from when I made the Double Courgette and Bean Salad, I had quite a few issues sourcing yellow courgettes. Whether this is because they’re naturally elusive in my part of the world, or just because they’re not yet in season, we may never know, but I was lucky enough to find a packet in the shops yesterday. It, therefore, seemed only right to get Nigella’s Happiness Soup in on the cookalong too.
Nigella’s Happiness Soup
After a day of walking about the countryside, several pints of stout, a stout and steak pie with chips, this was the perfect, easy-cooking soup to end the day. Its colour is almost artificial, in a beautiful way, and I’m intrigued to make it in the natural light of day; not under the horrendous orange-hueing bulbs that we have in our house.
I was too hungry, too tired and too frustrated with the orangeness of our lights to do this one justice by capturing a good photo. Nevertheless, it captures a happy colour.
Flavour musings
For just very few ingredients you get something pretty exceptional here. It’s got that sourness I find positively addictive and it’s impossible not to cook and eat this with a smile on your face.
The name alone invokes pure joy - and just to speak the words summons smiles upon faces. It’s enlivening and addictively delicious. It’s a happy kind of sourness.
