Day 148: yellow food

For my own sanity, and indeed my husband’s, I may have to make a vow that from this day forward I no longer cook yellow food on this cookalong. For the only reason that I find it impossible to photograph! We’ve covered this before, I know: it’s not about the photograph, it’s about the taste. But my stubbornness really comes into play when taking photographs of my cookalong creations - I strive for perfection. Or at least a perfection that’s realistic using a camera phone (and not the best one at that) and no professional lighting; relying only on natural daylight coming in through very small windows! As soon as the sun goes down and dusk comes out my chance for a good photo is over. This is going to be quite problematic as we enter the Months of Shorter Days.

Perhaps it’s not meant to be photographed. Perhaps yellow food is like a heavenly apparition; only destined to be captured by a device worthy. I.e. not a camera phone! Who knows. I’m not a photographer. Let’s move on.

This one has been on my Nigella Summer Line-up for quite some time now. I bought the monkfish for it a few weeks ago at the fishmonger’s and it’s been waiting in the freezer since. Last night, it finally happened. It’s yellower than yellow and a pain in the arse to photo, but oh what a joyous thing to eat.

Nigella’s Kerala Fish Curry with Lemon Rice

I made the sauce first and then the rice. When the rice was resting, with a tea towel draped over it, I added the orange-hued chunks of fish to the waiting sauce and onions.

Instead of the black mustard seeds, I used toasted nigella seeds and yellow mustard seeds.

Flavour musings

Hot and sour, sweet and creamy and delightfully fragrant. A gorgeous thing to look at and a divine thing to eat. Turmeric is surely the embodiment of happiness and sunshine.

Forgive the lack of imagination in my writing today, I’m feeling rather fragile after a few too many vodka martinis last night!

The recipe for the Kerala Fish Curry is in the link below and the Lemon Rice recipe can be found in Nigella Summer.
